At the present time, there are a lot of peering projects in the international internet community. They allow both to save on Internet traffic, and significantly improve the quality and speed. All of them are local in nature and are usually located within one city. Carriers and Providers from other regions (countries) are connected to these platforms utilising leased lines. This leads to a number of additional complexities, we list only the major:
- Need to rent a communication channel to each traffic exchange point;
- Need to install (rent) equipment at each node;
- Need to pay for connection to each peering community;
- Required to enter into and maintain agreements with several peering sites (which are located in different countries with their financial and legal requirements);
- Must have a sufficient number of highly qualified staff to service such a distributed network.
Project W-ix lets his members in any of the W-ix points of presence to get all the advantages of simultaneous connection to multiple peerings. This will require the only one local connection. Member of this project is receiving 2 services at one time: classic peering at the 2-d level within a regional hub w-ix (such as in Moscow), plus traffic from other IXs which in turn is connected w-ix.
W-ix has its own international transmissions between the major points of traffic exchange and invites members of the project to receive traffic from them at a price considerably less than the cost of Internet traffic.
How it works
W-ix works within a single city on the 2-m level and the relationship between participants is carried out directly, as in any other peering . Either through Rout-server with all the other points of traffic exchange in which the W-ix is a participant. See picture below.

- Increased speed (peering ports are not clogged with traffic, unlike Internet-multiplexed bandwidth/upstreams)
- And The most important ! Real savings on foreign international facilities and IP-traffic.
